Comfrey Poultices – Bone Mending Magick!

Not many know that I just recently fractured my left foot – a spiral fracture of the metatarsal bone to be exact – two Saturdays ago via a silly fall from atop my stool in my office, as I was reaching in my storage shelves to find my satin emerald table cloth for last Saturday’s art opening event I had. I guess I took that good luck phrase people say to you, “break a leg,” a little too seriously.
Everything happens for a reason and one of the message I got was that I needed to slow down and that change was going to shatteringly hit my life in a big way! Oh boy!
My intuition told me that it was a fracture and that it would need to just heal on its own, but at the prompting of loved ones, five days after the fall, I went to see an orthopedic doctor to get it checked out. They were worried since it was hugely swollen and bruised and didn’t want permanent damage done. Gotta love peeps for caring!
In the meantime, the lovely Laura Bruno, whom I’d shared the news with, since she’s my dear friend, had mentioned looking up information on comfrey poultices to see what I could find and to use my own guidance and judgment on its use, forewarning only to use it “externally” for short periods if I did, as it can be toxic to the liver. But she remembered it being called “knitbone.”
So I did look it up and did some research including information on how to make my own comfrey poultices and in the interim I stayed off my foot (hopping around at first, then picked up crutches at the local pharmacy) while I applied my comfrey magickal potions all day long for the next 4 days, starting Sunday after the fall on Saturday.
I read it was good both fresh and dried so after calling to find fresh comfrey, to no avail, I was lucky to have one store that carried it dried. Mixing it with my ionized/alkaline water and a little flour to create a paste, I spread the comfrey poultices on cotton rags and folded them into squares. I put a freshly made one on my foot where I knew the fracture was and wrapped it in bandages to hold it in place. I then took the remaining 3 and put them in a ziploc bag with parchment paper inbetween, in the freezer to use in the days following.
When I visited the doctor last Thursday he confirmed my suspicions and basically said the fracture would have to heal itself. I saw the x-rays he took and he showed me how my bone was perfectly straight and aligned with a line through it. I believe the comfrey poultices had already worked their magick, as I had wacked the heck out of my foot with all my weight on the wood floor when I came crashing down off the stool. One good thing came of the doctor visit, which I try to avoid unless absolutely necessary, was getting this very funny black hard shoe I like to call my Frankenfoot because it makes me look like and walk like Frankenstein! LOL! The doctor said I could put pressure on my foot and to use my pain as a gauge, as doing so actually induces healing. My sweet friend and rock support system through all of this and then some, Allison Jacobson, had confirmed this when she researched my injury and read many people talking about how some tried not putting any pressure on it and some did and those that did actually had the best healing.
Until then I’d completely stayed off my foot and had been applying the comfrey every day, while using my crutches. But upon return home I did away with my crutches and started trying out my foot, finding I could actually put pressure on it and I wasn’t having pains by just mindfully shifting weight a bit and with the use of my new Frankenfoot I was Frankensteining around the house! Yay!! Mobility again! Really makes you grateful for what you have! My foot immediately started decreasing the huge swelling that I had and now my foot only has a tiny bit of swelling, but is getting close to normal. It still has the bruising a lot, but bruising takes a bit more time for my body regardless.
Today I just made the last batch of my comfrey poultices to utilize for the next four days and I feel I’ll be on my way after this. It has only been a week and a half and it’s already done some efficient healing! The doctor told me to expect 4-6 weeks, but between my comfrey and Reiki, and all the lovely healing support from great friends like Laura and Allison, that time will likely be cut in half or 2/3.
I’ve been able to just walk on my own now with this shoe, but mostly because I wanted to ease into things, but it feels like my foot would be fine without the shoe (as now and then I do walk without it at home) and I know shortly I’ll be able to just walk gingerly on my own. No marathon runs or strenuous hikes and biking, but definitely will be walking normally in no time.
Comfrey is one powerful healing plant! It’s also known as the miracle herb and forgotten herb. Well….it won’t be forgotten in my book!
Here’s some info on Comfrey:
Known for centuries as a priceless herb for wounds, sprains, bruises, and broken bones in both people and animals, comfrey (genus name, Symphytum – meaning to “unite or knit together,” leaves and roots can be used both fresh or dried. The name com-firma means, simply, “knitting of bones,” which is why comfrey is often called knitbone and healing herb.
Comfrey’s success as a healing agent is due to a special substance it contains called allantoin—a substance that speeds the production of new cells and aids in wound granulation (healing) – basically a cell proliferative. This means it makes cells grow faster, which is one of the reasons why comfrey-treated bones knit so fast, wounds mend quickly, and burns heal with such little to no scarring.
Allantoin is the same substance found in the placenta of a pregnant mother, which supports rapid baby growth and is also in the mother’s milk in abundance and then decreases as the child grows.
Comfrey is rich in vitamin B12, which is important to vegans and vegetarians, as very few plants have B12, and is also rich in vitamins B1, B2, C, E, A, pantothenic acid plus calcium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus.
Good thing is that you can receive the greatest medicinal benefits equally so without ingesting it, so this way you can avoid the toxicity it can cause. But used externally for short periods comfrey is safe, even for babies. When used as a wound dressing its magick shines through and can really work wonders.
Like with anything consult an expert or doctor when seriously injured, but even doctor’s admit to comfrey’s power to speed the healing process. So it’s a great, complimentary support to any treatment you need, desire or choose. So if you find yourself with an unexpected wound, cut, sprain, burn, or break, you can turn to comfrey for comfort. Comfy Comfrey to the rescue!!!
Again, remember never to ingest comfrey and to only use it topically. Consult a professional when in doubt. I offer no medical advice. I only offer my personal experience. And after having had 2 other fractures, of which I never used comfrey poultices with, I can say that it DOES make a huge difference in the efficient healing process.

Celebrating an Evening of Creative Collaborations

This past Saturday, 2/25, we enjoyed a fun filled night of celebrations and artistic inspirations at the Circa 92 Art Show, which was a collaborative effort of style, art, design, food, photography, music and great people. As I’ve mentioned, I believe that co-creating and collaborating like this is the wave of the future and that we will be seeing more meetings of the minds and hearts as things unfold in 2012 and beyond.
My friends surprised me with a little pre-birthday celebration and gorgeous piece-of-art cake, both by sight and taste, by Bianca Blanco of http://www.bellasavour.com/ , which truly topped the night off. And thank you for the gorgeous sunflowers (my fav!) and wildflowers bouquet from Allison and Chris Jacobson. I am so blessed to have such thoughtful and supportive friends.

It was a really great evening and beautiful turnout. I was excited to be debuting new pieces of art that are a new genre of creations for me channeling through, to be launching our new crystal pendants (blog to come with these new birthings!) and to present my book, Spiritual Skin in person for the first time.
It was a night, as I put it, to “experience.” Just as I let go and allow when I create, it was my hope that those that joined us for this evening and those of you that will join us for events to come, will always keep that at the heart of your goal – to let go, allow and simply “experience” through your heart.

A Day of Joy!

Today is all about JOY!!! Yes, Joy for life, Joy of love and definitely love of JOY!!!
Happy 3 year Anniversary Joy (aka Tiny and several other love names)!!! Today, three years ago, I picked up my precious little Joy from SaveABunny.org as a birthday gift to me, after she came into my dream and spoke to me telepathically. This connection was made by my dearly departed Nestor in a story that is too long to share and hard for some to grasp. The pick up was shared with Laura Bruno, who accompanied me for a special birthday celebration feast at Cafe Gratitude up north, followed by a visit to the shelter to get my new bunny love. It was about a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive from my home in Lake Tahoe, but worth it for good food, friend, fun and love!
Laura and I had met the SaveABunny.org Founder, Marcy Schaaf and some of her staff at the World Veg Festival in San Francisco, which included Ambassador Scooter, a sweet rescue lop bunny whose found sanctuary with Marcy.

Founded in 1999, SaveABunny is a nonprofit, volunteer-oriented animal rescue organization based in Mill Valley, California and recognized as a leader in the “new generation” of rabbit rescue. SaveABunny rescues and assists Northern California shelters to adopt more than 300 domestic rabbits per year and is funded primarily through donations and grants, and secondarily through adoption fees and specialty services such as boarding, rabbit grooming, and limited merchandise sales. I was assisting Laura, as her photograher, with an article she was writing for We Like It Raw, when we were guided to the SaveABunny booth.
After talking with Marcy, not only did I learn the very disheartening fact that rabbits are the #3 most euthanized animals after dogs and cats, but I discovered what Nestie had in store for me. I knew I had to be a part of supporting Marcy’s heartfelt efforts and so I did visit the shelter to give healing Reiki energy to the bunnies there, which is how I first met Joy Juliana – as she was named Juliana, which I kept as her middle name and still call her Jules and Jewel as some of her nick names. I received confirmation of Nestie’s nudge when a SaveABunny t-shirt suddenly came into my visual field. I turned to Laura and said, “Oh my gosh! It’s Nestie!” And so it was, and of course I quickly purchased the t-shirt (All proceeds going straight to the bunnies of course!) with grey lop-earred bunny under a Full Moon, of all things! It is an exact image of what Nestor looked like and depicted her connection with the moon. I always heed the signs!

At first I was against getting another bunny, after having lost Nestor, which was the most traumatic experience of my life. But I knew Nestie knew better and there was some healing alchemy in her plan in store. So, I listened to the insistent nudges that kept coming to me with visions of Joy and not being able to stop thinking about her. I ended up emailing Marcy to ask about her after some time had past from my first meeting with her. Marcy informed me that a family had come to see her and were thinking about taking her, but she knew my dedicated love and being a Reiki practitioner herself she understood the magick of the story I relayed and said, if you want her, she’s yours.

I didn’t hesitate after that and went to get her two days before my birthday. Marcy informed me that right after I had told her I was taking Joy, that the family had called wanting Joy for sure. Timing is everything! Joy knew this, which is why she showed up in my dream with a message really fast because she preferred coming home with me and knew she had only a window to work quickly. Luckily I listend because she has brought so much love and magick back into my life and has not only aided my healing of losing Nestor physically, but she’s proven to bring some very powerful gifts into our experience together, allows me to cuddle her, whereas Nestie had her own way I honored, and facilitates communication between Nestor and I, sometimes channeling Nestor.
It’s such an amazing friendship we have.
There just simply are NO coincidences! Thank you Nestie! And thanks to Marcy for the love that she shares, for Laura who supported me in the process of bringing Joy into my life and for Joy showing up just when I needed her, and she me.

Never Lose Sight of the Dream that Leads You Home
Sometimes we just need little inspiring reminders and supportive words that fuel the voices within that can sometimes become faint when there are other influences we allow to infiltrate what we know.
So today I’m just sharing some inspirations from messages I’ve received to support continued belief in my dreams and in staying true to who I am despite ANYTHING. Perhaps they might speak to you today as that synchronous nudge, answer, or message you were asking for or needed.
I was touched by this beautiful birthday card I received from my parents yesterday with this message pictured above.
I also received another birthday card with a message with five years of shifting meaning that came to me now in a new way, pictured below by my dear friend, Laura.
And yesterday, as I was listening to one of my cds I was intuitively drawn to while I was painting, I came across one of my many favorite songs, which holds these lyrics by Pamela McNeill, as message. It’s on a Yanni cd and the song is called “The Promise” :

The Heart of First Matter – Cosmic Alchemy in a Sacred Tattoo

Today I’d like to share an interesting journey that led me to an answer and some cool unfoldings and new discoveries. Every now and then I like to share the stories behind some of the creations that channel through, as they hold some cool synchronous messages, as well as shed interesting light on supportive information that can be of benefit to others.
I was commissioned to do a custom sacred tattoo design by a very magickal client near the end of January. This client found me by divine connection, had never wanted or even had any tattoos until now, and provided no instruction saying they were leaving it up to my guides and theirs for this creation to manifest – basically stating the belief it was an attunement process for both of us and I’d know when to start and would be guided through it now that the connection had been made.
I so loved the openness to this magickal flow that was initiated and felt an extremely deep honor in being part of the energetic co-creation.
As instructed, I let myself be guided as to when I’d start, as if I tried to start when timing wasn’t ready, I came against huge blocks, was pulled everywhere else but to focus on the design, and felt unmotivated. So I honored the trust and opening and let things percolate in the background.
When timing felt ready I began- first allowing to listen, I also started following some energetic leads of things I was sensing in research to see where things lead, and then asking for inspiration in meditation for an image.
I then saw in my mind’s eye this image that I’d drawn five years ago right before embarking on my second trip to Egypt – this one for a 9-9-9 event – 9/9/2007. I received the image in a dream, which involved a man I had not met in this life yet, but ended up being on the trip, which I drew when I awoke. I brought it with me to Egypt and showed a few people to see if anyone knew what it meant or if it had any meaning at all. I was hopeful that since these people were highly enlightened individuals, all with unique spiritual gifts, we’d be bound to discover some meaning. But, nobody knew what the symbol was, although found it interesting. I kept it in my Egypt notebook I’d taken notes in from that trip and hadn’t looked at it until I was prompted from this nudge.
I put it aside, as at first I wasn’t getting the connection since I didn’t have any idea what the symbol was. So I continued my researching of other nudges. I then suddenly stumbled upon a symbol that looked very similar to mine, while perusing other info and symbols. I started reading about it and following other threads leading me to more similar images and information that finally was revealing to me what I had stumbled upon in my own unique way.
The symbol information and others’ depictions of it was supporting the image I had drawn that basically held the same characteristics and energy. The symbol is called First Matter or The Prima Materia – The One Thing. Some also refer to it as Chaos (or Chaostar) or Earth of Paradise. Sometimes depicted as the ouroboros and even sometimes as two dueling dragons at each other’s throats, releasing inherent male and female energies through the shared blood – similar to the Yin/Yang symbol. To me, it also could be similar to Hunab Ku – The Galactic Butterfly.
Some explain the essence of the First Matter, which is chaos, as seeming to evoke octal or octagon imagery. For alchemists, chaos is the First Matter and the source of all transformative energy. This eight-pointed star (the “Chaostar”) is symbolic of the chaos and power of the First Matter, which captures within its design the fractal concept of “order within chaos.

I took my original symbol I’d drawn five years ago and fused it with new, potent energy I felt guided and inspired to incorporate to create a portal symbol of this energy for my client in the now. I felt, for several reasons, guided to encircle the symbol with an artistic rendering of two dragons connected as a unified essence in that Yin/Yang, Oneness-nature, minus the dueling energy. Instead, I had them energetically “holding” the energy of the symbol between them, representing alchemical magick within our ability to masterfully co-create. The essence of the idea that even though something seems chaotic and operating outside our control, there is a harmonious order that is within our grasp when we unify our parts. I felt that each represented the empowered male and female circling continuously in harmony. The image came to birthing conclusion on yesterday’s Pisces New Moon.
My client was right. This would be an attunement process for us both, revealing some interesting things. The journey in creating this piece is also VERY mirroring for me. It unlocked some hidden wisdom that supports my “now” experience of this “order within chaos” concept as source for transmutation and transformative integration to wholeness. A little lesson in spiritual alchemy and how to perceive things through a different lens of divine perfection for what is in manifestation, regardless of how it appears. As always, symbolism will speak to each person in relative ways.
The alchemists believed that no transformation—whether in the laboratory, in the body, or in the soul—could succeed without the presence of a mysterious ingredient known as the Materia Prima (First Matter).

Slowing Down Amidst the Rapid Change – Lessons that Will Catapult
Today’s post is about renewed perseverance and trust fused with the grace of steady and wise, discerning patience, release and allowance. Phew! That’s a mouthful, but let’s break it down into bite-sized morsels for better absorption.
Perseverance to see what we have set forth in motion through, regardless of what things seem like.
Trust to keep believing and knowing that the goal is near.
Grace to be in your divinity.
Steadiness to take time to reflect, keep balanced, make calculated moves with little to no effort and in deliberate steps – think of the tortoise.
Wise discernment to understand and know which choices best honor you in every experience you engage in.
Releases of all old baggage once and for all that no longer serves you and in letting go of old structures, patterns, beliefs, and ways of doing things.
Allowance in vulnerably embracing and asking for help from friends, loved ones, your spirit guides, the angels, elementals, the Universe, etc. and letting go of control in order to receive that which you ask for in a more appropriately aligned way that matches the new you you are becoming.
A lesson I am having to learn every day with some very loud and clear nudges. I know like many, I have experienced the consistent drive regardless of the bumps in the road that can in the moment feel completely defeating. Yet, it’s time to change the way we have been operating and for some that may be more extreme than for others, especially in reference to the types of messages we receive to get our attention. Yet things ARE really shifting. I’m seeing this rapid change over the last couple of months and I can see how my intentions are starting to manifest. So its not the time to throw in the towel even when we get hit over the head with something that can feel so discouraging, as it is reminder to us not to take with us anything old and to ensure we continue the journey anew. With the right adjustments we will leap ahead even though the steps may “seem” slower in the moment. Don’t get caught up in the details and the illusion. We cannot bring the old into what is unfolding collectively. We are so close and we are not alone in this.
I had recently gone through a sort of physical breakdown of adjustments that needed my attention and tending to, in bringing forth my last remnants of biggest challenges in life, loud and clear. And once I started to embrace the understanding of this and shifted perspective, along with getting more grounded and doing supportive things energetically, things instantly did start to shift my experience. Then came the next hurdle, or remnants of those things not quite finished, with bigger messages that would definitely be attention grabbers, which happened recently with major allergies I’ve never had in the mornings (that I finally have a handle on) and then yesterday in falling off a stool and having what appears to be a foot fracture. Accident? Of course not. An ingeniously devised mechanism of knowing how to click the light bulb on for me – a way to make myself stop.
As always, I find the message in what takes place. Not everyone has to have extreme things, but being that I’ve been an extremist, the only way my essence knows to get my attention and stop me, is to literally stop me! So while I could have remained on the floor when I fell (which I did for a few minutes of tears and pain) in discouragement and given up, I got up and said I understand. Thank you for loving me enough to help me see the way. If pain is embraced, it holds its polarity of joy for you to experience. I’m currently working on naturally healing this fracture and know the time in doing so will be beneficial to revamp some things and take a step back.
So while this may be a very challenging period, I remain optimistic and positive that the things I’ve energetically focused on are coming to be and are actually manifesting, so I have this downtime to make the refinements, take care of myself and be taken care of -calculatingly pull back the reins just a bit, before I get ready to take off. It kind of reminds me of the movie Sea Biscuit (yes, here comes another horse story) and the amazing heart of that little horse who loved to get wind of the disbelief and obstacles that seemed insurmountable (even with a fractured leg) and once he embraced that spirit of nothing can stop me even though my legs may be shorter and it seems physically impossible, the courage of my heart and the love for running free will get me where I want to be – and I’ll do it on my terms and as a whole being with all of my parts in tact and operating authentically. This fracture is but a temporary resting point to get deeper in touch and come back even stronger, as well as let things catch up with how fast I was going so that divine timing can unfold.
I’d like to leave you with these very inspiring quotes to help support any disillusionment, discouragement or dismay you may be experiencing. I know how that feels and have been there many times. What I’ve learned is to turn the painful energy into fuel for my passionate fire and continue to believe no matter what things “appear” to be or what anyone else says. I see the bigger picture, not just the pieces and I know there are no limitations unless I believe so. What could be grim to one, is an opportunity in the making for another. Juice of the Day – Tropical Vibes to Warm Up Your Winter
Today I just thought it would be fun to share the juice I just made, which is not only refreshing, but has a tropical taste and feel for those cold winter blues. A way to feel transported to a sunny, exotic beach envisioning sipping a tropical blend created just for you. Okay, well you’ll be the one creating it in the now, but what better way to do a little self-nurturing and activating of those manifesting abilities for your intentions.
I do everything by eye and of course, as an artist, I just sort of blend in what I am intuitively drawn to. This blend makes about 2 full glasses (maybe a little more) and tastes a lot like a pineapple blend even though there’s no pineapple! Yes, it’s magic! The photo isn’t so good in capturing color, but when stirred, it has a beautiful, deep peachy hue – kind of like a melon.
So this is “about” the all organic ingredients I remember for today’s juice I’ll call Living Sunrise:
4 large apples
1 pear
1 large cucumber
1 1/2 inches of ginger
10 large strawberries
2 medium oranges
1 lemon
the equivalent of about 2 – 2 1/2 large carrots
As always, you can use your left over fiber from your juicer to create some raw vegan yummies like dehydrated veggie burgers, add the fiber to make your own blend of raw crackers or bread, or add to raw cookie or cake recipes! Enjoy!
