Why It’s Important To Understand Your Dark Side
More reiteration about the importance of embracing your shadow parts.
About Those Shadows ….
Perfect and synchronous post. Thank you Laura!! I was literally conveying the same exact message in both of these quotes when Laura chimed in with these powerful Nietzsche quotes that explained what I was saying to the “t” and so beautifully! I love that. Great post!
Shadows of darkness and light
Another amazingly rich and powerful piece written by Anna Nimm. I so resonate with everything she shares here and in fact it is reflective of what I often get into discussion about in my workshops, as this is what I feel to be the key stuff. Again we are hitting on transmutation here.
Having seen the movie Maleficent, I was right there with Anna, sharing in her insights, but even if you haven’t seen the movie, you will find this to be well worth the read and easy to grasp the concepts Anna so beautifully expresses.
And if you get the chance to see the movie, please do.
Thank you Anna Nimm for yet another brilliant and important share.
Courage to Explore the Darkness
Everyone has talent. What’s rare is the courage to follow it to the dark places where it leads. ~Erica Jong
What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery. ~Thomas Merton
Full Moon Illuminations
“We are powerful beyond measure, and so deeply vulnerable at the same time. This may seem like a dichotomy, but it isn’t. We have misunderstood real power. It has been something assertive, non-surrendering, pushing on through. This is not real power. This is simply willfulness. Real power is something else – – receptivity, openness, the courage to keep your heart open on the darkest of days, the strength to feel it all even when the odds are stacked against you. Real power is showing up with your heart on your sleeve and absolutely refusing to waste one moment of your life hidden behind edginess and armor. The art of enheartened presence. Now that’s power.”
~Quote by Jeff Brown, which to me captures the Full Moon energy now, and beyond.
I woke early again to the dark night sky, but this morning it was illuminated by the beautiful Full Moon. As I connected and tuned in, sending out energy to the collective, Earth, and intents, I felt a glow in my heart expanding and deepening in trust. I looked at the rabbit in the moon, now upside down this morning, thinking of my dear Nestor and Joy (my rabbits in this life).
Last night before bed I took a walk around the neighborhood by the light of the Moon and the sea cucumbers came to mind again and their message. As I was brushing my teeth upon return I noticed a Ladybug on the ceiling of the bathroom scurrying along.
I thought that to be quite a magickal little sign out of nowhere, as I got up on the counter to scoop her up and put her outside in the Moonlight.
If you don’t recall, I posted a couple of photos of sea cucumbers yesterday that I saw on Sunday, with a brief caption mentioning the uncanny connection I made to the sea cucumbers I’d seen last year at the same time.
It felt significant to make mention of again, so I’ll go with my intuition on that to do so.
If you didn’t see yesterday’s post, or didn’t read the captions on the photos, what I’m drawing attention to is the discovery I made about the appearance of these sea cucumbers and their timing. I go to my favorite beach very often, each week in fact, and I’m quite observant to anything that uniquely appears or isn’t around that normally is.
This last weekend I came upon two pink and orange sea cucumbers after walking the full length of the beach up and down. I was excited to see them, as I have only once before come upon them, which was last year. That time I’d seen 100’s of them. Sad to now only see two, perhaps reflecting Earth changes, tidal patterns, the result of harmful effects, or a personal message, but I was also grateful to see them, as they are so enchanted and sparkly like stars.
Yesterday, as I searched for my post of last year I stumbled upon the date and title: Reflections on the Current Intensities & Today’s Lunar Eclipse Full Moon in Aries October 18th, 2013
It was almost exactly one year ago (by 13 days) that they’d appeared, but also between last night and this morning, we revisited a Full Moon Total Eclipse in Aries again, along with a Blood Moon. There is an obvious connection with these particular sea cucumbers and this Moon phase, and it was drawing my attention to re-read their symbolism and the insights I had shared last year. It felt significant.
And this is what I reflected on last night while I took my Full Moon walk.
This morning as I gazed at the Moon, I was reminded.
But as I read last year’s post, there was also another uncanny connection, which I’m only now making this morning.
Last year, also at the same Full Moon Eclipse time, my rabbit Joy had been deeply affected. She had gone into a very deep, reflective, and inner mode, not moving for most of the day and not wanting to open her eyes. I remember being worried about her, but also realizing her sensitivities to energy and connection with the Moon cycles. She pulled out of it slowly by night and by morning after, she was back to herself.
Well, not only did the sea cucumbers return this year around the same Moon cycle, but Joy also went through a very powerful, energetic scare Monday afternoon, right before the Full Moon, but still in connection with the intense energies that are being felt around this time period that lead up and continue after. She was hit really hard by frequencies she was picking up that were foreign to her and causing her great confusion, panic, and painful discomfort. So much so that she backed herself into the fireplace to hide and wait it out for a good portion of the day. I moved into the living room to work so I could be with her and I’m happy to say she also pulled out of it by evening and the next day, yesterday, was back to herself again.
There is definitely something about the energy of this Moon cycle and a connection to be made. Couple that with all of the other influences abound: Astroflash Monthly Horoscope for October 2014 and you have quite the intensity.
I’ll keep open to insights, but there feels to be a cosmic opening and ancient rebalancing in order.
But to keep things a bit more manageable, you can read my last year’s post about the sea cucumbers, Joy, and the insights on Libra/Aries energy that this Full Moon brings to a head for us in the day-to-day, at the link above.
If you don’t make it there, these are the parts that stood out from it to repost today:
Sea Cucumbers symbolize heightened communication, emphasizing hormone levels along with unconscious signals and nerves. Sea Cucumber demonstrates an attention to emotions. Ability to change from rigid to soft by utilizing emotional balance. She shows how to remain firm in tight or delicate situations. Great movement with minimum amount of energy. Watch for potential symbiotic relationships to form. Do you withdraw and retract yourself when you feel threatened? She will teach you when to guard your emotional self. Is it time to create a tough exterior? She will show how to build up your defenses, spiritually, physically and emotionally.
And the sea cucumbers we saw were all hardened, since they were out of the water and in “delicate situations” of being out of their safe and comforting natural surroundings. They seemed to be mirroring that call to tend to our deepest emotions and to understand their resiliency and capability to adapt and shift, when we allow them to flow naturally and maintain that balance. We’ve heard the message before that it’s crucial to get very intimate right now with vulnerability and yet understand how to shift and adjust our boundaries, knowing we have the ability support ourselves when need be.
Needless to say, all of this relates to the energy of this Full Moon – a culmination period that promises fullfillment of what was intended and begun at the New Moon. It is also a heightened time of emotions and this particular one also happens to be a Lunar Eclipse, which places an added potency. And since we have the Libra Sun in opposition to the Aries Moon, we are being asked to look at how we balance these polarities of “self” and “others” – our needs and their needs.
Libra asks us to look at “relationships” and that includes the one we have with ourselves, while being present with the authenticity of who we individually are. This is a challenging one, as Aries likes to self assert and Libra is the expert in compromising. And neither are to be neglected, so this Full Moon initiates invitation to exercise the practice of emotional balance that honors both responsibly. This will take some time, but right now there is likely a lot of personal build-up that is either getting ready to burst, or is in process of releasing already, as you do need to express what you’ve been holding in and on to.
The beauty is that the more we practice allowing expression, the more we find it can be a graceful dance between autonomy and sharing. At first it may not yet be rational, so taking extra care at this time so nothing super explosive happens, may be wise. Everyone is going through their own form of crisis or transformative shifts, so realize that what others say and do is coming from the same place of needing to express a lot of old stuff that has nothing to do with you and yet in every way has the ability to provide you with everything you can utilize for self-growth and supporting growth in others.
Like the sea cucumbers, there are a lot of emotions and unspoken needs that are coming to light right now and that can create that fine line between hardening ourselves permanently for fear of what others might think or in reaction to how they react, or seeing ourselves in the other and challenging that extra depth of courage and compassion, knowing they are just as frightened as you.
This is that place between Aries and Libra that you can ignite.
Things may be challenging, some things may fall apart, but this temporary chaos is the onset of lighter experiences ahead.
If you’re feeling that deep sense of needing to break free, then this is time to open yourself fully to ALL possibilities for how that can come about without attaching to a particular outcome.
Eclipses are extremely potent and they can help support the perfect life-crisis needed and in line with your path of choice, to help you to make the changes you deeply want. So in this way, it’s not to fear the Eclipse, nor to fear change, but to realize the silver lining and positive energy that can be harnessed by something that is created in line with and for your highest good.
The “lunation” illuminates things in a way that can seem sudden, but in fact have been ongoing in a repressed way. So when hit with that seeming “out-of-the-blue” crisis, the reality is we are the ones precipitating the change because our Higher Self knows we need it and will only stand by for so long. Deep down, we know that change is necessary for growth.
Lunar Eclipses are more relationship-oriented and that includes with others, with ourselves, and as well with our work, health, bodies, etc. Their effects can also last longer – some astrologers feel Lunar Eclipse effects can last 3 – 6 months. However that is, there is the potential now that you may have been, or are experiencing a sudden state of heightened awareness surrounding everything in your life that is calling to your attention a lot of the flaws and things you are not happy with. But because of the heightened emotions, decisions are best to be made with presence and reflection.
Breaking free is something we all would like, and yet we can do it in a balanced way so as not to create temporary relief or new challenges.
Integration Lifetimes and the Splitting of the Worlds
This is such an important, at least in my opinion, powerful, and very well written and insightful post by my dear friend, Laura Bruno. Laura does a wonderful job at explaining the energetic environment that we as souls are experiencing, and how that equates to the kind of lifetime you are in, this time around.
Some of us are experiencing Integration Lifetimes, which leaves many empowering and creative choices available than mere black and white, or even grey. Others are experiencing more “regular” lifetimes and so things that work for them will not work, and may feel either unsatisfying, or eventually backfire, for anyone living an Integration Lifetime who judges themselves against others not like them.
I got a sweet surprise that she actually included some of my way that I live with and embody shadow in her piece. So you’ll get a glimpse of that in her post.
We are all different and so we will need to choose the path of integration that works for us, without comparing to others. That said, if something you’ve chosen isn’t working, then perhaps you could revisit other options that may be more fitting for you, rather than ones you might have opted for as easier or because others seemed to be having success with it.
I know this is so true for me, as I have no desire to, or can’t engage in, many of the things that I see others around me getting so much out of in their own lives. I know that it is perfect for them, but it doesn’t feel aligned with or right for me and leaves me hugely unsatisfied and gaining nothing from it. That’s why people are surprised to learn that I don’t engage in certain things they would “think” I should be, based on ideas of what people have about a certain way of being. I’ve carved out a way and things that work for me and I’m not afraid to be different since I know it’s for my highest good to follow my intuition.
Remember, you are not someone else. So choose accordingly to your vibrational frequency.
Excellent and resonating post. Thank you Laura for so clearly explaining this. I hope people will find some gems of insight and comfort to support their process.
September 2014 Astro-Energy Report: Times They Are-A-Changing
This is a great article on current energies we’re experiencing collectively by Sarah Varcas of www.astro-awakenings.co.uk. Sarah shares what I feel to be some “spot-on” insights from what I’m feeling/sensing from around.
The original was posted here: September 2014 Astro-Energy Report and also reposted here: September 2014 Astro-Energy Report.
Here are Sarah’s insights:
After the intense pressure (both positive and negative) many have experienced during August, September 2014 comes as something of a relief! It offers a break of sorts during which we can catch our breath, take some time out and settle into our ‘new normal’. There has been a recent energetic theme which can best be characterised as the ‘return of the repressed’. This Freudian term is used to denote the emergence into consciousness of repressed thoughts, feelings and memories many of which we may have believed were over and done with. Such a process often occurs at times of intense change, largely because it is our unconscious which conspires to prevent us from changing in fundamentally life-altering ways. During a time such as we have been through these past few months, the gates to the unconscious are flung open with every suppressed fear, denied emotion, ignored desire bursting out to assault our senses and do its level best to keep us from stepping out of our comfort zone. Just when we thought we’d dealt with our lack of self-worth bam! Self-hatred rears its ugly head the likes of which we’ve not encountered in a long time. Just when we thought that depression we struggled with for so long was healed, there it is again, penetrating every corner with its heavy, oppressive presence. Just when we thought we’d really got to grips with ‘this whole compassion thing’, we can’t bear to be in the same room as anyone else for fear of ripping their head off! We can end up feeling like nothing has changed and we’re simply the same person we were a year, two years, ten or twenty years ago!!
The other side of this coin is the rapid shifts which have taken place for many in the past couple of months. Positive progress has abounded in some peoples’ lives, but even this doesn’t come without its stresses! Big change often comes without guarantees. We know what we have to do and that doing it is now unavoidable, but we don’t know what the outcome will be, only that we cannot remain where we are. We take a leap of faith and hope for the best. Wherever we find ourselves on this spectrum of experience, September offers an opportunity to process more deeply all that has happened in recent weeks, and come home to ourselves in the midst of all this change.
Throughout September an alliance between Saturn in Scorpio and the North Node in Libra provides the energetic backdrop. It encourages us to own up to aspects of our shadow-self which may have been causing concern and allow them to show us where and how they need to be accommodated to align with the flow of life at this time. The problem with the shadow is that we allow it to isolate and shame us into silence. That’s why we repress it, denying the thoughts and feelings which cause us so much consternation. Anger, despair, hatred, jealousy, fear, feelings of rejection, of unworthiness, any or all of these and more can be cast into the unconscious in order to keep our every day consciousness free of such troublesome emotions. The process seems tidy and efficient, but in practice it doesn’t work so well. The amount of energy used up trying to keep everything hidden, albeit unconsciously, is energy we don’t have available for our own well-being. It’s like leaving an electrical appliance plugged in, using up power when we don’t need to. It’s costly and unnecessary. Energy is precious. It requires respect!
The funniest thing about the unconscious is that we all have one and mostly its contents are the same as everyone else’s. The details may vary a bit, but basically it’s the usual morass of anger, lust, envy, fear blah, blah, blah. We’re simply hiding what we all share, but somehow, somewhere along the line we’ve picked up the belief that it’s only us who has these feelings and we really need to make sure no one else finds out otherwise there’ll be all kinds of trouble!! This is how we collectively prevent anyone else owning up and ensuring that no one points out what’s really going on in the human psyche.
So why am I saying all this? Because September is a great month for normalising what we all share; for accepting, without fuss or fanfare, that we all have these strange and sometimes troublesome tendencies and it’s all part of being human, not some dreadful aberration with which only we have been burdened. Anger, jealousy, depression, hatred, despair, violent impulses, lust, whatever it is we’re not owning up to we can rest assured there are thousands out there not owning up to the same things!! It’s what makes us human, apparently! We don’t need to make a huge drama out of it, wailing and beating our chests. Simply accepting that all this mess comes with the human territory can clear away a whole load of pain and stress right there! September can be ‘coming out of the unconscious closet’ month and if we make it work we’ll all feel significantly more relaxed by the end of it!
After the first week of the month, during which we can settle into the terrain of low-drama ‘this is just the way it is’, we have a Full Moon in Pisces conjunct Chiron. This is a powerfully healing Moon, but it may come with exceptionally heightened sensitivity for a couple of days either side. Be sure to schedule in some time out and avoid stressful environments and activities if possible. When Chiron is lit up by a Full Moon there is enormous healing power to ‘download’ but as the healing brings us back to a state of wholeness the imbalances previously maintained may become particularly evident for a while. If so it may be useful to remember that energy is simply energy, neither good nor bad, just neutral, so whatever ails us can be transmuted into something that heals us if we let it. If however, we identify too strongly with the pain and distress we solidify it and create energetic structures which are far tougher to transmute and shift.
This Full Moon speaks of healing needed due to our previous avoidance of difficult emotions. The imbalances it seeks to correct are those created by denial. It asks us to feel fully whatever arises now, no matter how much we believe doing so will overwhelm us. It won’t. And in allowing the feelings to be felt fully and without judgement we are inviting healing into our lives and allowing our energy field to rebalance and realign. This is a time to watch our thoughts with an air of detachment, to refuse to believe what they tell us about ourselves. We are not our thoughts nor our feelings, but something altogether more constant and dependable which rests beneath them. We are the presence which can watch thoughts and feelings come and go, the life force which hums gently beneath all drama, passion, despair, joy and rage. This Full Moon calls us to identify with that, not the fleeting content of mind, and to know ourselves as something altogether more present and vibrant.
A few days after the Full Moon, Mars enters Sagittarius (on 13th/14th September) offering a lift and some positive energy to power our journey. This shift of Mars comes with inspiration and motivation. The healing from the Full Moon can really make its mark now as we move forward increasingly unencumbered by old energies which restrict and define us in ways no longer fitting for who we are. Mars remains in Sagittarius until the end of October, so we have a useful ally here who can help keep us upbeat during the down times and focused on the goal when getting there seems like a burdensome struggle. The 16th September sees further in-coming support in the form of an alliance between Uranus, Chiron and Jupiter remaining until the beginning of October. Freedom is most definitely in the air here, if we choose to claim it. But it must be a choice and we have to commit to following through on the choice, even when the going gets tough! This is not freedom without a price. This freedom comes at the expense of security, certainty and predictability. It challenges our assumptions and cuts shackles we may prefer to keep right now, thank you very much! But if we can allow those shackles to be cut and keep the faith that in doing so something greater can emerge in our lives, the final two weeks of September sees us laying the groundwork for the two eclipses in October, the first of which (Lunar Eclipse on 8th October GMT) packs a particularly liberating punch! (More on that nearer the time..).
The 22nd September GMT sees Pluto stationing direct in Capricorn. Retrograde since mid April, it has uncovered some dark and painful places both personally and collectively. Issues of power and power-over, revenge, resentment and hatred have been rife alongside a strengthening of those prepared to look such suffering in the face and see it through and out the other side into clarity and freedom. The about- turn of Pluto this month adds weight to the theme of normalising the shadow so we can all own up. There’s no need for shame or fear if we’re prepared to own it and work with it consciously, getting to know our own psyche at a deeper and infinitely more intimate level. Many of us seek intimacy with others, especially that ‘special’ other, but we shy from intimacy with ourselves first and foremost. The heavens this month call us to self-intimacy before all else: a willingness to give up shame and embrace all that we are and all that we have to share with others.
A New Moon in the second degree of Libra on 24th September heralds the start of an eclipse season which lasts until the end of October. The Sabian Symbol for this degree signifies an increase in the frequency of light, a vibrational upgrade, setting the scene for the coming eclipses in October and providing clear and unequivocal indication of their potential! It is very encouraging to see this zodiac degree accented now, after this month’s themes. Ah, the power of acceptance to enlighten and illuminate! This New Moon does exactly that, demonstrating what all this challenging inner work has been in aid of.
The month comes to a close with the Sun and Neptune in a quincunx alignment from 26th to 30th, connecting the divine will with our own personal one. This connection comes not without challenge as we may discover in stark terms precisely where we are unwilling to surrender to a higher understanding, preferring our personal perspective for a while longer! No worries: we can only go as far as we can go, and if we need to stick around where we are that’s fine too. An eclipse season always comes with stops and starts, and if this is a stop, a start will be on its tail before we know it! So wherever we find ourselves come the month end we can be sure of one thing: times they are a-changing and we with them.
Gut Reactions, Shadow Work and Past Life Bleedthrough
This is a powerful share by my dear Laura Bruno that can really have life-changing effects if you are willing to really do the work. I have seen many people run and hide from others who bring up uncomfortable and challenging feelings, feeling they are in the “right”, but guess what? The shadow doesn’t disappear, unless you actively engage it in a dance of willingness to explore, integrate, and love it as a part of you being reflected in them. While you may temporarily pull within to do that work, it will be of benefit if you actually do it and not just decide to avoid the person because it will come up again in someone or some other situation nonetheless. I see all things as gifts, and that includes the really uncomfortable, “icky” stuff. I can’t tell you how working with my shadow has benefited my life and changed everything. Thank you Laura for the insights on shadow, past lives, and one valuable tool – The Blue Room.
