From the Mouth of a Child – My Favorite Statement of 2013

kaleToday, or rather this eve, is one of those enchanted times I remember as a little girl and carry that magick in my heart always and all year round. I find myself singing Christmas songs no matter the time of year, especially the ones from my favorite stop-motion animations like Rudolph, The Year Without a Santa Claus, Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town, etc.

I’ll always be a child at heart and no matter how many times I see those movies, it’s like the first time.

So it’s no wonder that one of my favorite statements of 2013 comes from a little girl I overheard this weekend at the closure of this year. There have been a lot of profound messages and moments of inspired realizations throughout the year, but because this one is so simple and yet has so many layers of depth to it, and of course because it comes from a child, it makes it all that much more profound and memorable.

throwing rocksSo I felt to share it with you, as you reflect on the closure of one year’s door opening into another.

If nothing else, it’s sure to give you a giggle. 😉

Straight from the mouth of babes, comes remarkable and insightful statements that inherently have wisdom beyond their years and will surprise you. The beauty of these statements is that these children simply are speaking purity and truth, not knowing anything other than this, because they have yet to have their open channel from Source obscured with conditioning.

This weekend as we were hiking, we came across a father and his young son and daughter (likely both around the ages of 5 – 7. The son had picked up some rocks and started throwing them over the side of the hill, as we passed by. The father said to his son, “Do you remember what I said about throwing rocks?” And something to the effect of reminding him not to do that.

eating kaleAnd before the little boy could answer, his sister (who was younger than him) said to her brother:

“Instead of throwing rocks you should eat kale.”

LOL!! I LOVE this! What depth of meaning this simple and seemingly arbitrary statement implies, as to an understanding she already has a hold of at such an early age.

I immediately giggled and asked Dave if he heard what she said. He asked me to repeat it and I told him. He said, “That’s what I thought she said, but it was so surprising that I thought I’d heard wrong.”

I said, “Nope, you heard right and that was the beauty of what she said.”

The family went on to have a very interesting and meaningful discussion we could hear for a little while, until our faster pace distanced a hill between us.

Maybe it’s just me and Dave, but we both said this was our favorite thing we’ve heard in a long time because it was so innocent and pure, yet powerful.

Rather than explain what I took away from the meaning of her statement, I’d rather it sit with you, as I think it’s more valuable to explore things for yourself with curiosity and reflection, so that you can arrive at answers that speak YOUR truth.

But I do indeed love the message of her statement, as we celebrate the light of this holiday season and welcome a new year of possibilities and change.

Wishing you much peace, compassion, and love today and always. However you choose to celebrate the holidays, I hope it is a joyous and heart-opening experience.

Speaking of which, a quick shout out to my precious “Joy” who also celebrates her 10th birthday today – also a shining example of purity, joyous love, gentle power, tenderness, serene wisdom, and childlike laughter and wonder.
