Ancient Musings of the Tarot

There are many theories about the origins of the Tarot. Throughout the ages, studies of the occult (meaning hidden) were not readily available for the most part. They were kept deeply hidden and secretly away by the prevailing authorities of the time, depending on the reflective attitude of the culture towards such knowledge.

One theory was that there existed scrolls in the great library of Alexandria in Egypt that contained all the wisdom of the ancient world, which were kept by the librarian, Hypatia. And that one of these scrolls contained the basis of the secret teachings of the Book of Thoth. This legendary book's esoteric teachings are said to be hidden innocently within the Tarot's allegorical illustrations, as tools for personal development; meant as preservation of this ancient knowledge.

Gypsies (considered corrupt forms of Egyptians) were said to have carried these cards to Europe where they were quickly condemned by the Catholic Church.

The images themselves are undoubtedly linked to varying ancient mythologies, beliefs and religious systems yet clearly also to human psychological and spiritual experiences to be used for the enlightenment of discovering authenticity within.

Regardless of their history, they read as a universal story of personal journeying through the challenges and triumphs of life. The images of the Tarot call up a resonance within the individual for integration into their life. They are like clarifying patterns of meaning, weaving a story that triggers an activation to take place. Tarot can be used for meditation or insightful delving and questioning by helping to reveal what is already within, but what one is unaware of. This activation of intuition and illumination of our inner knowingness is key to unlocking the gateway to the unconscious.
